Anger, Fear, Aggression

I recently had reason to reexamine the possibility of using Fate Accelerated to run Star Wars. This post collect my thoughts on that for later. I’ve already run a session once, nearly two years ago, which you can find here: though it doesn’t use much of what follows below.

My Defaults

Fate is at its best when everyone is one the same page regarding the setting and themes for the game. With an established setting like Star Wars, opinions on the nature of the Force are varied. My own defaults: I start with only the original trilogy and negotiate from there. I don’t count sources in the EU or the prequels. (That isn’t to say that I won’t use any of it if it’s handy or interesting, but they aren’t part of my default.)

Expedition to Castle Ravenloft in the 13th Age: Sessions 14-16

•April 21, 2015 • Leave a Comment

These sessions are largely story-focused and nothing new in the way of the conversion as appeared yet.

I really like how the story is progressing! The players aren’t just reacting anymore. They are considering events in the valley and choosing who they lie too (and how!) very carefully. I take that as a good sign that they are engaged with the story.

In the last session we briefly discussed bringing Icon relationships into the game. Since the character are no longer in the Dragon Empire, we are giving the group as a whole relationship dice corresponding with the factions they have interacted with so far. I don’t have a clear plan for them yet, but they are in place if I need ’em.

Videos after the jump.

5E D&D Revenge of the Iron Lich

•March 22, 2015 • Leave a Comment

I’m very proud to present the 5th Edition D&D conversion of Revenge of the Iron Lich by SVDPress.

RotIL 5E Notes
RotIL 5E Monsters

This is not standalone documents. To use them, you need a copy of Revenge of the Iron Lich, which you can pick up for free at You also need to know how to play 5th Edition D&D. All the basic rules are available for free at

Revenge was written for D&D 4th Edition, which is significantly different in tone and style from the 5th Edition. Some liberties were taken in order to make the encounters fit while staying faithful to the spirit of the original. If you have any comments or suggestions, send them to me at

It didn’t make the notes doc, but the conversion is meant for 16th-level characters, just like the original. The encounters were planned for 4 characters of that level but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t run it for a larger party.

Power Word: SHILL

Ever since I saw Sersa V tweet “Power Word: Thrill” I’ve wanted it on a shirt. As the joke goes, “Proper t-shirt selection is critical to DMing Iron Trident”.

As I was wrapping up the Iron Lich conversion, I got the idea that even though I only had 1 week to do it, I could have this made. I was all set to just pay for some plain text on a shirt, but an artist friend of mine volunteered to design the logo!

Anda didn’t ask for money but, in addition to the very nice gift that I will give to her anyway, I’m urging you to visit her RedBubble account. Check out the design and drop some cash if you feel so inspired.

It looks good on me!

Expedition to Castle Ravenloft in the 13th Age: Sessions 11-13

Working on a side-project derailed my semi-regular postings of the 13th Age Ravenloft game, which is still in progress. There was no combat to speak of in these session and more discussion/roleplaying. Which is not to say that there’s a few exciting developments in episode 13!

I’m still very pleased with the direction of the game. I wish we had better attendance but that’s no different than any other game. Life takes precedence and with tech issues added in, it’s not unusual to only have three players these days.

The last three videos are after the jump.

Converting Revenge of the Iron Lich

•March 1, 2015 • Leave a Comment

It’s done! IT’S DONE!

I can’t tell you how over-my head I felt after I took on converting this module for 5th Edition D&D. Revenge was originally written for 4th Ed, which is very, very different. At times, the only similarity between the editions seemed to be the name. There’s an entirely different anatomy once you get down to the bones of these editions.

For that reason alone, any conversion is going to be its own thing. I tried to preserve the spirit and signature “Oh Shit!” moments of the delve without feeling beholden to re-create 4E in 5E.

Over the month, I’ll be posting specifics about converting the rooms. For now, I’m leaving you with some starting math and assumptions.
